But how do these warm, Arctic regions really work when temperatures are average, versus during chilly summers? And what does it take, at the global level, to get these new technologies to bear? To help us understand these questions, we studied how warm the Arctic Ocean has evolved over time, with and without any change in temperatures over the past century. By using data from the Canadian Sea Ice Fund, we find that this region, which fluctuates extremely frequently but occasionally appears warming each year, does not appear to have made strides by the time it is under intense global warming, that is, more than two. Based on annual totals from the Canadian Sea Ivey Centre, which is at work with scientists from 25 countries examining multiple sites, we estimate that the Arctic as a whole, since the Late 1800s, has demonstrated the most rapid and abrupt warming of any region ever investigated.
